What is the importance of Homa / Havan?

The Brahmins, Vysyas and some Kshathriyas are all initiated to do Gayathri Upasana. Those who are initiated with Upanayana samskara usually perform havan. During poojas, we offer Nevidya to Gods and Goddess in the process of worship. During Havan, we can feed Gods and Goddess through Agnideva. Here the fire God Agnideva will carry our offerings direct to specific Gods or Goddess. People who are performing yajna or havan are receiving heavenly reactions either rains and the wind blowing noises indicating the satisfaction of Gods and Goddess This is the only way we can feed Gods and Goddesses

Havan is a holy purification ritual and this leads to purification of our mind and body. The mind is going to be able to concentrate more on spiritual activities. During this, gods or goddess are worshipped and sacred mantras are recited offering Ghee chanting Swaha. Havan is always performed by lighting a holy fire in the centre. This ritual is always carried out with the help of a priest, where all the family members get involved. When you perform it, the fire god is invoked to bless the members of the family.

In the course of the havan, several sacred pooja items such as lotus seeds, fruits, flowers, sandal chips, honey, ghee, herbs, etc. are offered to Gods and Goddesses through havan kund. You can organise a havan in your house or a temple. You can buy Havan samagri in the nearest Indian shops in both the USA and UK and some shops in India send to you by taking online orders. Rules that must be followed for a havan:
Whenever Havan is held in the morning, one must participate with an empty stomach.
You must always cleanse yourself thoroughly before the havan by taking head bath
Traditional silk kache panche for men and silk saree for laddies festive clothes are worn during the ceremony.
When one moves around the havan kund, it must be done so in a clockwise direction.
All the offerings that are made to Havan Kunda must be done so with the right hand without using the index finger. Only use the middle finger, ring finger and the thumb when you are offering Aahuthi to God.

Special havans are usually performed during special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, housewarming ceremonies, festivals, etc. Basically, it can be put into two categories, i.e., the dropping of ahuti and chanting the holy Vedic mantras. The substances that are dropped inside the havan kund are nutritious, aromatic, medicinal and sweet. In Sathyanarayana Udyapane the Sathya Narayana Prasada is offered direct Swami Sathynarayana through Agni-deva chanting Vishnu Sahasra Nama Swaha at the end of the shlokas

The basic essence of the meaning behind performing this ritual is, the man flushes out all the impurities from his body and mind this, in turn, affects the immediate atmosphere. Thus, performing homas or havans purifies and enriches the atmosphere around all of us and Gods will be pleased and you will be blessed. So Havan is very beneficial to all and to the whole universe to attain peace in the society. All Great sages lived thousands of years by doing havan on a regular basis with great devotion which is very important.

Sage Viswamithra lived from the time of Harischandra King to several Surya Vamsha kings including Sri Rama’s time and in Lava kush time also During the Havan procedure mostly square type Kunda with three steps type is constructed. I did Rudra Homa Havan in Katmandu and also in Kailasa Manasa Sarovara in my India Trip a few years ago. I also conducted Rudra Abhisheka and Havan during my 60th birthday in Kadur Vasavi temple.

I also conducted Srinivasa Kalyana with Havan and later next day Chandi Homa during another visit to India in Kadur Sringeri Sharada Mutta at my 70th Birthday. On a regular basis, I will join with other devotees in Purushasukta Homa almost monthly in Middlesborough Hindu temple. There are several Hindu temples all over the world do Havan on a regular weekly basis also with lots of Hindu devotees attending. We can see in this part of Kali Yuga which is very auspicious part with devotional activities and spiritual congregations originated by mother country from India to all over the world by Hindus. Another big contribution from Iscon by Hare Krishna group needs to be mentioned for increasing the devotional aspect spreading to all other people and population including non-Hindus joining with Krishna prayers as per our slogan Vasudeva kutumbam and spreading Bhagavadgita.

Lots of people are initiated to do Gayathri Upasana and Havan all over the world by Iscon irrespective of their country and religion towards declaring the whole world is one kutamba.

Homa is also called Havan or yajna. In sanskrit yajna is called as Agnihothra. The fire God Agni is supposed to be worshiped and requested to take the sacrifice to the appropriate God to whom the sacrifice is supposed to be reached.
Homa produces specific effects in the environment and has therapeutic effect on minds of people who perform homa.To obtain Gods grace and to make advance spiritually the conducting homa and satisfying God is a known vedic ritual. Arya Vysyas do conduct homas in various ritiuals in their life.

The fire God Agni disintegrate air-bourne impurities and cleans the atmosphere. The ash of the yajna has a curative effect on certain diseases. The smoke coming from Yajna or Homa is going to spread all over the house and this has been told to bring the peace and happiness to the family.

Yajnakartha when he wants to do Yajna he has to get up in the early hours of the morning and have a shampoo bath. He has to wear Kachepanche and shalya on the top. He has to arrange things required for yajna. One should be seated on a mat or on a wooden low level platform in the prayer room after the bath in the early morning facing the east . Vibhuthi should be applied on the centre of the eyebrow in the forehead. Silver plate with silver panchapathre with Uddarane filled with water kept in front of you. See Gayathri matha picture and visualise Usually in India they make a square brick built agnikunda and in western society they uses metal Agnikunda ready made for the purpose. In my house I have arranged bricks to construct the yajna kunda when required.

I also got a metal Agnikunda as a portable to take to other friends house when required. Homa Samithu or homa samigri packet and Ghee to use for Yajna. Small vessel with melted ghee with long spoon. Wooden one made special for the purpose available in India and it can be obtained in western society if you paln early. Long stainless steel spoon could be used for the purpose if special wooden one is not available. He has to have pooja plate with arisna, kumkum ,akshathe and flowers and fruits. Yajnakarthas wife usually prepares some payasa or sweet for Nivedya. In the prayer toom the idols are cleaned and after applying kumkum on the foreheads of the idol they are placed in position. Yajnakartha does usual morning sandhyavandhana and get ready for yajna. Here I have simplified the total programme and made easy steps to follow for Yajnakartha.

Homa kunda is arranged by bricks in a square or a rectangle fashion and the sand is about 4 or 5” spread inside and then on the surface of the sand Agni is palced by Panch Pathivrathas. Usually the sisters of the Yajna Karthra is given this opportunity to bring fire God AGNI to the Havan Kunda with others following with her. Yajnakartha usually give gift to sisters.
